Exercise Programs

At the Parkinson’s Association, we believe that a goal directed exercise program is the single most important activity that people affected by Parkinson’s can do to promote their health and well-being.  Decades of scientific study and countless personal experiences confirm that exercise is a crucial tool for non-medicinal management of the movement, cognitive and emotional symptoms of Parkinson’s. In addition, exercise can have considerable benefits for the well-being of care partners. However, not all forms of exercise provide the same benefits.  For example, in controlled scientific studies Tai Chi decreased falls in people with Parkinson’s while aerobic exercise increased endurance and heart health. More importantly, supervision of the participant in exercise programs provides feedback and correction.  Performing an exercise “wrong” can render it useless, or worse, cause injury.

With these important factors in mind, our team has assembled this Exercise Resource Guide for anyone affected by Parkinson’s; whether a patient or care partner.

When looking for an exercise program or class to join remember to assess what that class or program can do for you. To judge the quality of an exercise program, the Minds and Motion team asks these questions:

  • What is the purpose of the program?
  • How does it benefit symptoms of Parkinson’s?
  • Are the facilities Parkinson’s friendly? (Are they ADA compliant?)
  • Is staff knowledgeable about the special needs of people with Parkinson’s?
  • Does the staff assess clients to provide the proper type and amount of exercise?
  • Are specific goals and milestones discussed and recorded?
  • How is the program organized: Individual activities, small groups, large classes?
  • Are there meaningful programs of activities for care partners?
  • Are participants tracked for progress toward their goals?
  • What makes this program fun and exciting?

We hope you find the following information useful as you continue on your journey to improving your quality of life and living well with Parkinson’s!

**If you have any exercise program in your city that will benefit people with Parkinson’s, please e-mail: mhenberger@parkinsonsassociation.org **
