About Parkinson’s:

More than 15,000 people have Parkinson’s in San Diego and, nationally, it’s estimated there are one million people with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s is a chronic, progressive neurologic disorder characterized by the slow degeneration of nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls movement.

The cardinal motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s may include:

  •     Resting tremor
  •     Slowness of movement (bradykinesia)
  •     Rigidity
  •     Postural instability

Non-motor symptoms may include:

  •     Depression
  •     Anxiety
  •     Increased sweating
  •     Low blood pressure when standing
  •     Loss of smell
  •     Internal tremor
  •     Changes in thinking

About The Parkinson's Association:

1980:  Support group of people with Parkinson’s and their families members begin to meet

1983:  American Parkinson’s Disease Association asks the group to become a local chapter and establish an Information & Referral Center

1989:  Parkinson’s Association is incorporated as a 501(c)3

2009:  Celebrates 20th Anniversary

2011:  Changes name to Parkinson’s Association of San Diego

2014:  Expands services to the Greater Los Angeles area and changes name to The Parkinson's Association
