Medications

You may have heard that Parkinson’s is a unique condition.  It treats each person a little differently in its symptoms, progression, etc.  So it may come as no surprise to you that the medication that persons with Parkinson’s use will vary as well.  People may start medications at different times and they may even start on different medications.  Below is a list of medications that are commonly used to calm the symptoms of Parkinson’s.

– Levodopa/Carbidopa (Sinemet, Stalevo)
– Mono-Amine Oxidase Inhibitors (Azilect, Zelapar)
– Dopamine agonists (Mirapex, Requip)
– Anticholinergics (Artane, Cogentin)
– Amantadine (Symmetrel)
– Beta-blocking agents
– COMT Inhibitors (Tasmar, Comtan)

Each medication acts differently, and each comes with its own potential side effects.

There are also medications that should be avoided or used with caution when you have Parkinson’s. If you like, we can mail you a wallet-sized list of these medications so you can have them available at all times.

Anytime you receive a new prescription, be sure to discuss any other medications (prescription and over the counter), vitamins and supplements with your doctor or pharmacist.

Prescription Assistance

The Parkinson’s Disease Resource Page is intended to provide information on Parkinson’s Disease and to streamline and simplify the way those with Parkinson’s Disease may find assistance paying for their medications.

Please Note:  We recommend consulting your doctor or pharmacist before using any prescription or over-the-counter medication, including supplements.

The above information on medication is taken from the Parkinson’s Handbook, created by The American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA).
